Balancing work and your social life
Posted on August 10, 2011
When first starting out in the real world, your career will take up the majority of your time. The longer workday and the constant workload may take some getting used to. While giving your best to your career is a great thing to do, if work consumes your life, you may end up burned out and unmotivated, negatively affecting the work that you do. It is important to remember to make some time for yourself in addition to being dedicated to your job.
A great way to do that is becoming involved in other activities in your community. Maybe your job has a company softball teams that plays once or twice a week. This is a great way to blow off some steam mid-week and be able to take part in a fun activity. It is also a great way to develop camaraderie and friendship with your coworkers. Most communities offering these leagues have men’s teams as well as co-ed teams. Look around for ways to partake in fun activities in your community.
There is sure to be an activity that you enjoy. For some people, working a puzzle or reading a book brings the greatest amount of peace. Others enjoy leisurely outings, like a round of golf. Reading, according to Persistence Unlimited, not only relieves stress, but also increases skills like creativeness, focus, memory and vocabulary. Reading is also relatively inexpensive if you are buying the books, and it is free if you check out books from your local library! If golf is more of your thing, but you are concerned about the cost, many courses’ rates are lower if you tee off later in the evening. Depending on where in the country you are and what time of the year it is, you can get in a full round of golf for half-cost, and sometimes even a third of the original price! Taking time out for you is a great way to destress and recharge.
Another way to get away from work and get refreshed is to spend time with close friends and family. Maybe there is a lake, beach or another fun destination nearby. Look for public facilities to reduce costs. Take the people you are close to out for a relaxing weekend. Most companies provide time for vacation. Take advantage of those days, especially if you lose it if not taken. You’ll get to spend quality time away from work with friends and family, and will be recharged and refocused on your return to work.
Work can be stressful. If you don’t get out of the office and take time to live a life along with working, it can be bad for your job and your health. Use your free time to spend time doing things that you like to do and recharge your batteries!
