Choosing the right college

Posted on June 16, 2011

When it is time to choose a college, there are many important factors to consider- many of which have little to do with how good the football team is. Most colleges have a variety of opportunities to offer, but only a few may be the right fit for you. Take into consideration all of the factors below to choose the school that will give you the best chance at steering your life in the direction you want it to go.

A major factor to consider is the quality of the degree in the field that you plan to go into. Some colleges have great photography programs, but their business school may be lacking, and vice versa. It all depends on what your plan is for your career beyond graduation. Another thing that is important to consider is the value of the school. In other words, what school offers the best education for the money?

The scholarship opportunities offered by the school are another thing to ponder. It is no secret that a college is an expensive endeavor and most colleges offer scholarships. Some are merit-based, some need-based and others career specific. It is smart to research which scholarships different schools of interest offer before a decision is made.

The location of the school is also a big factor. Would you rather stay close to home or go some place a few hours away? Is there a family member in a different state that you want to go to school by? Are you interested in studying in a different country? Many schools offer study abroad programs that allow you to do this through the domestic university. All of these questions need to be answered before choosing a school.

Choosing a school is a very important decision to make in one’s life. Remember that it is never too late to go to college, and you do not have to go straight out of high school. Also, just because a school is bigger than your high school or a “big name” university, it doesn’t mean that it is the right fit. It is a good idea to visit a number of schools before making your decision. Physically visiting each school will help ensure that you will make the right choice.

College will be an exciting time in your life, so do not let the stress overshadow the thrill. Make sure to spend the proper amount of time considering your options to find the right college for you.
